His playing style was influenced by Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys, and he is often regarded as an innovator in the newgrass style of banjo playing. Johnson's approach to the instrument helped shape the genre, which was further refined by prominent musicians including Béla Fleck, Alison Brown, Scott Vestal of the Sam Bush Band, and Jens Krüger of the Kruger Brothers.
