Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer (December 13, 1929 – February 5, 2021) was a Canadian actor with a career spanning seven decades in film, stage, and television. His achievements include winning an Academy Award, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He is the only Canadian actor to have received the Triple Crown of Acting, which also encompasses a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, along with a Grammy Award nomination. Plummer began his acting career in Ottawa before performing in Canada, the United States, and Bermuda. He made his Broadway debut in 1954 in The Starcross Story and earned Tony Awards for his roles in Cyrano (1974) and Barrymore (1997). His other Tony nominations include performances in J.B., Othello, No Man's Land, King Lear, and Inherit the Wind. His film debut was in Stage Struck in 1958, and he gained widespread recognition as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965). Other notable films include The Fall of the Roman Empire, Waterloo, The Man Who Would Be King, and roles in the Star Trek series, Malcolm X, and The Insider. Plummer received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners (2011) and was nominated for this award for his portrayals of Leo Tolstoy and J. Paul Getty. His diverse career included collaborations in notable productions across multiple genres until his death in 2021.
