Chloe Zhao: podcast appearances and interviews

Chloé Zhao, born Zhao Ting on March 31, 1982, is a Chinese filmmaker known for her work on independent films. Her debut feature, Songs My Brothers Taught Me, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. Her second film, The Rider, was critically acclaimed and received nominations for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Film and Best Director. Zhao gained international recognition with her 2020 film Nomadland, which she wrote, produced, edited and directed. The film won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It earned four Oscar nominations, with Zhao winning for Best Picture and Best Director, making her the second woman to win the Oscar for Best Director and the first woman of color to do so. She received further accolades from the Directors Guild of America, the Golden Globe Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards. In 2021, Zhao co-wrote and directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals. Her 2025 film Hamnet premiered at the Telluride Film Festival to critical acclaim, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned Zhao her second nomination for Best Director, making her only the second woman after Jane Campion to receive two nominations in this category.
