About Carter G. Woodson
Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950) was an American historian, author, and journalist known for founding the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was among the first scholars to study the history of the Black African diaspora in the United States. In 1916, he established The Journal of Negro History, and he is often referred to as the 'father of Black history.' In February 1926, Woodson launched the celebration of Negro History Week, which later evolved into Black History Month. His work contributed significantly to the movement of Afrocentrism by emphasizing the importance of placing people of Sub-Saharan African descent at the center of historical study and human experience. Born in Virginia to parents who were former slaves, Woodson faced the need to leave school to work in coal mines in West Virginia. Despite this, he graduated from Berea College and went on to become a teacher and school administrator. He earned graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and became the second African American to receive a PhD in history from Harvard University, following W. E. B. Du Bois. Notably, he is the only person whose parents were enslaved in the United States to attain a PhD in history. Throughout his career, Woodson worked largely in Washington, D.C., managing the ASALH, engaging in public speaking, writing, and publishing, while teaching at Howard University and West Virginia State University, both historically black colleges.
