Caroline Patricia Lucas, born on December 9, 1960, in Malvern, Worcestershire, is a British politician affiliated with the Green Party of England and Wales. She has served as the party's leader during multiple periods, including from 2003 to 2006, 2007 to 2012, and from 2016 to 2018. Lucas was elected as the Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion in 2010 and served until 2024. She was the Green Party's first MP and remained its only MP until the 2024 general election. Lucas pursued higher education at the University of Exeter and the University of Kansas, earning a PhD from the University of Exeter in 1989. She joined the Green Party in 1986 and held various roles within the party, including service on Oxfordshire County Council from 1993 to 1997. In addition to her parliamentary work, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for South East England in 1999 and re-elected in 2004 and 2009. During her time in Europe, she also served as the party's female Principal Speaker from 2003 to 2006 and from 2007 to 2008. Lucas stepped down as party leader in 2012 to focus on her parliamentary responsibilities and later resumed leadership duties alongside Jonathan Bartley from 2016 to 2018. In June 2023, she announced her intention not to seek re-election in 2024.
