About Carol Graham
Carol Graham, born on January 29, 1962, is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, where she holds the Leo Pasvolsky Chair. She is also a professor at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor. Graham has authored numerous books, papers, and edited volume chapters, establishing herself as an expert on a variety of issues including poverty, inequality, insecurity, the political economy of market reforms, subjective well-being, and the economics of happiness. Her work explores the determinants of happiness within and across countries at different levels of development, often revealing counterintuitive relationships. Her notable books include Happiness around the World: the Paradox of Happy Peasants and Miserable Millionaires, published by Oxford University Press in 2010 and translated into several languages. Her latest book, The Pursuit of Happiness: An Economy of Well-Being, published by the Brookings Institution Press in 2011, investigates how new science and metrics of well-being can influence policy and serve as benchmarks for economic progress. Graham's research has been supported by various organizations including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the World Bank, and the National Institute of Aging. She has served on a National Academy of Sciences Panel on well-being metrics and public policy and received the Distinguished Research Fellow Award from the International Society for Quality of Life Studies in 2014.
