Caleb Gardner was an American slave trader and slavery oligarch from Newport, Rhode Island, born on January 24, 1739, and died on December 24, 1806. He owned or co-owned more than a dozen slave trade vessels and often captained ships on their voyages. As a boy, Gardner lived near the harbor and owned a boat, which helped him become familiar with the waters and islands of Narragansett Bay. In his youth, he developed proficiency in the triangular trade, sailing his own ship to China and the East Indies. Gardner became a prolific global slave trader, bringing thousands of enslaved people to diverse locations including Barbados, Charleston, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, Havana, Montgomery, New York, Jamaica, Rhode Island, St. Helena, and St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. His activities contributed significantly to the transatlantic slave trade during that period, marking him as a notable figure in the history of American participation in this commerce.
