Brendan Burke: podcast appearances and interviews

Brendan Gilmore Burke was an athlete and student manager at Miami University, where he contributed to the RedHawks men's ice hockey team. He was the youngest son of Brian Burke, a former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a longtime NHL executive, as well as a member of the US Olympic hockey team. Burke gained national attention in November 2009 for publicly coming out as gay, advocating for tolerance and speaking out against homophobia in professional sports. His openness was widely praised by sports news outlets and fans, sparking discussions about homophobia in hockey and making him a pioneer in advocacy efforts within the sport. Burke was recognized as potentially the closest person associated with the NHL to publicly disclose his sexuality in support of LGBT awareness. Tragically, he died in a car crash on February 5, 2010. In the aftermath of his death, several hockey teams honored his memory and contributions to LGBT advocacy in hockey. The Brendan Burke Internship was established by USA Hockey to recognize his work in hockey management. Additionally, a documentary titled The Legacy of Brendan Burke aired on CBC Television in November 2010. His death also served as a catalyst for the creation of the You Can Play project, a campaign aimed at ending homophobia in sports.
