Bobby Sullivan: podcast appearances and interviews

Bobby Sullivan is a musician and activist known for his involvement in the Washington, DC punk scene and his work with the band Soulside. Founded in 1983, Soulside released multiple albums under the Dischord Records label and toured extensively across North America and Europe. Notably, they were the only American band to perform at illegal punk shows in East Berlin in the 1980s, events held in Lutheran churches as acts of resistance against the East German dictatorship. Following the band's split, Sullivan formed the band 7 League Boots in Boston, which blended reggae and rock sounds and released several recordings. He then joined Rain Like The Sound Of Trains in Washington DC before founding Sevens with his brother Mark Sullivan, both projects producing work with the producer Tim Kerr. In his later years, Sullivan became actively engaged in social justice initiatives. Mentored by Civil Rights activist Eric Weinberger, he contributed to Food Not Bombs, working in soup kitchens for the homeless in Washington DC and Boston for five years. He was also instrumental in establishing the DC chapter of the Anarchist Black Cross, a support network for political prisoners, and developed close ties with figures such as Ramona Africa from the MOVE Organization, as well as former Black Panthers and Weather Underground members. Sullivan continues to make music with Soulside and authored the book Revolutionary Threads: Rastafari, Social Justice and Cooperative Economics, published in 2018.
