William Everett Preston was an American keyboardist, singer, and songwriter known for his work across multiple genres including R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. During the 1960s, he established himself as a prominent session keyboardist, collaborating with notable artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, the Everly Brothers, Reverend James Cleveland, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. Preston gained recognition as a solo artist with a series of hit singles, including 'That's the Way God Planned It,' the Grammy-winning 'Outa-Space,' 'Will It Go Round in Circles,' 'Space Race,' 'Nothing from Nothing,' and 'With You I'm Born Again.' He also co-wrote the song 'You Are So Beautiful,' which became a hit for Joe Cocker. Preston’s contributions to music history include one of the rare instances where a musician received a credit on a Beatles recording; the band's 1969 single 'Get Back' was credited as 'The Beatles with Billy Preston.' He is often referred to as a fifth Beatle due to his close association with the group. Following the breakup of the Beatles, Preston continued to record and perform, notably working with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and the Rolling Stones during the 1970s. His influence and musical versatility earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
