Bill Lee: podcast appearances and interviews

William James Edwards Lee III was an American jazz bassist and composer celebrated for his extensive collaborations with prominent artists such as Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin. His work also included compositions for jazz percussionist Max Roach and session performances for many of the twentieth century's influential musicians including Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Harry Belafonte, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, Billy Strayhorn, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger. Lee recorded three notable albums at the Black independent label Strata-East Records, among them The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe: A Spirit Speaks, The Brass Company: Colors with his sisters, and The New York Bass Violin Choir, a collaboration of seven basses. These works, which drew inspiration from memories of his childhood near former slave quarters, received critical acclaim and were performed at distinguished venues such as Central Park, Lincoln Center, and the Newport Jazz Festival. Trumpeter Theo Croker regarded Lee as one of the great American composers of his time, praising his harmonic complexity and melodic sensitivity. The New York Times noted that Lee's music combined the intricate harmonies of bebop and hard bop with a heartfelt, gospel-influenced feel, marked by unexpected yet satisfying musical passages. His career features appearances on over 250 albums, including contributions to iconic songs like 'Puff the Magic Dragon' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' Additionally, Lee appeared in films directed by his son Spike Lee and composed original soundtracks for several of his movies including She's Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, and Mo' Better Blues.
