Bernard Joseph Fanning, born on 15 August 1969, is an Australian musician and singer-songwriter known for his role as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Powderfinger. He was born and raised in Toowong, Brisbane, and received piano lessons from his mother at an early age. Fanning began writing music at the age of 15 while attending St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace. After graduating, he briefly studied journalism at the University of Queensland but dropped out to pursue a career in music. He joined Powderfinger after meeting Ian Haug in an economics class, and he assumed the role of lead singer when the band was formed in 1989. Over the course of fifteen years, Powderfinger released five studio albums and achieved significant mainstream success in Australia. During the band's hiatus in 2005, Fanning launched a solo career with the studio album Tea & Sympathy. Powderfinger reunited in 2007 and released two more albums before disbanding in late 2010. While the band's style centered on alternative rock, Fanning's solo work is generally described as a blend of blues and acoustic folk. He is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, piano, keyboards, and harmonica both in his solo performances and with Powderfinger.
