Bayard Rustin: podcast appearances and interviews
About Bayard Rustin
Bayard Rustin was an American political activist and a prominent leader in social movements advocating for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He played a key role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and collaborated with A. Philip Randolph on the March on Washington Movement in 1941 to push for the end of racial discrimination in the military and defense industries. Rustin also organized the Freedom Rides and helped to establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, mentoring Martin Luther King Jr. on nonviolent resistance. In 1954, he worked alongside Ella Baker on the Crusade for Citizenship and was involved in efforts to assist those threatened by eviction in tenant farms. As head of the AFL-CIO's A. Philip Randolph Institute, Rustin promoted union integration and the unionization of African Americans. During the 1970s and 1980s, he participated in humanitarian missions supporting refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia. A gay man, Rustin often worked behind the scenes due to criticism of his sexuality but later became a public advocate for gay causes. In his later years, he adopted neoconservative views, opposing racial quotas and Black studies programs as leader of Social Democrats USA. Rustin occasionally contributed to Commentary magazine and was recognized for his work with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Barack Obama. A nonprofit organization, the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, was established in 2018 in Princeton, New Jersey, to honor his legacy and serve marginalized communities including LGBTQIA+ youth.
