Atul Gawande: podcast appearances and interviews

Atul Gawande is an American surgeon, writer, and public health researcher. He holds the position of John and Cyndy Fish Chair in Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Gawande practices general and endocrine surgery and is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He also serves as the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. His work in public health includes chairing Ariadne Labs, a health systems innovation center, and Lifebox, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing surgical deaths worldwide. Gawande was named CEO of the healthcare venture Haven, owned by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JP Morgan Chase, on June 20, 2018, and stepped down as CEO in May 2020 while remaining as the organization's executive chairman. As an author, he has written several books including Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and Being Mortal, which explore various aspects of surgery, healthcare performance, and end-of-life issues. In November 2020, Gawande was appointed to President-elect Joe Biden's COVID-19 Advisory Board. He was confirmed as Assistant Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development in December 2021 and was sworn in at the start of 2022. Gawande served in this role until January 20, 2025, when he left office at the start of the new presidential administration.
