Aretha Franklin

Aretha Louise Franklin (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist known as the Queen of Soul. She gained early recognition as a gospel singer at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was a minister. Franklin signed with Columbia Records at the age of 18, but her career gained significant momentum after she signed with Atlantic Records in 1966. During her time at Atlantic, she released influential albums such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, and Aretha Now, which established her as a prominent figure in the music industry. Later, she signed with Arista Records in 1979, leading to a career revival with successful albums including Jump to It and Who's Zoomin' Who?. Franklin's extensive catalog includes over 75 million records sold worldwide and 112 singles on the US Billboard charts. Her notable hits encompass Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Think, I Say a Little Prayer, and others. Her performances and recordings earned her 18 Grammy Awards and numerous other honors, including lifetime achievement awards and inductions into several halls of fame. Franklin was the first female artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. She also received the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize citation for her contributions to American music and culture.
