About Annette Gordon-Reed
Annette Gordon-Reed is an American historian and law professor who holds the position of Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University. She is a professor of history within Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences and has previously held the titles of Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard and Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Gordon-Reed is recognized for her scholarship on Thomas Jefferson, particularly her research concerning his relationship with Sally Hemings and her children. Her book The Hemingses of Monticello earned her the Pulitzer Prize for History, the National Book Award for Nonfiction, and numerous other awards in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, she received the National Humanities Medal and a MacArthur Fellowship. She serves as a trustee of the National Humanities Center since 2018 and has been a member of the American Philosophical Society since 2019. Additionally, she is a trustee of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Her work has significantly contributed to American historical scholarship, particularly in the areas of legal history, slavery, and the legacy of Thomas Jefferson. Her research and academic leadership continue to influence discussions on American history and its interpretation within the scholarly community.
