Anna Sorokin, also known as Anna Delvey, is a Russian-German con artist and fraudster noted for posing as a wealthy heiress to infiltrate New York City’s upper-class social and art scenes from 2013 to 2017. Born near Moscow in 1991, she emigrated to Germany with her family at the age of 16. In 2011, she moved to London and Paris at age 20 before relocating to New York City in 2013. During her time in New York, she interned for the French fashion magazine Purple and developed plans for a private members' club and arts foundation, including leasing a large building for art exhibitions and pop-up shops. To fund her lifestyle, she created fake financial documents indicating a multi-million-euro trust fund and forged wire transfer confirmations. She deceived banks, acquaintances, and real estate agents into providing cash and large loans by presenting these fraudulent documents and checks. Her activities included residing in upscale hotels and engaging in various schemes to maintain her façade of wealth. Between 2013 and 2017, Delvey’s actions led to the defrauding of major financial institutions, individuals, and hotels. In 2017, she was arrested in a sting operation with the involvement of her former friend Rachel DeLoache Williams, who accused her of stealing $62,000. In 2019, she was convicted of attempted grand larceny, second-degree larceny, and theft of services, resulting in a sentence of four to twelve years in prison. After serving two years, she was released on parole and subsequently detained for deportation to Germany. Her story has garnered significant media attention, including a Vanity Fair article, a book titled My Friend Anna, and the Netflix miniseries Inventing Anna, among other adaptations.
