Angela Laverne Stone was an American singer-songwriter, rapper, actress, and record producer known for her influence on hip-hop and neo soul. Her career began in 1979 as a member of The Sequence, which was the first female music act in hip hop music. She later joined the R&B group Vertical Hold in the early 1990s. As a solo artist, she signed with Arista Records and released her debut album Black Diamond in 1999, which was certified gold and featured the single No More Rain In This Cloud. Her subsequent albums include Mahogany Soul, which produced the hit Wish I Didn't Miss You, Stone Love, and The Art of Love & War, the latter reaching number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In addition to her music career, Stone explored acting; she made her film debut in The Hot Chick in 2002 and performed as Big Mama Morton on Broadway in the musical Chicago in 2003. She appeared in films such as The Fighting Temptations and Pastor Brown, as well as television series and musical productions including VH1's Celebrity Fit Club and TV One's R&B Divas. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and nominations, including two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, an Edison Award, three Grammy nominations, and three Soul Train Music Award nominations. She was honored with the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors in 2021 and was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024. Her work has earned her over five million records in solo sales worldwide.
