Andrew Hamilton (circa 1676 – August 4, 1741) was a Scottish lawyer who settled in Philadelphia in the Thirteen Colonies. He is notably recognized for his legal defense of printer and newspaper publisher John Peter Zenger in 1735. Hamilton's involvement in this case contributed to the establishment that truth is a valid defense in libel accusations. His eloquent argument emphasized that the press has the right to expose and oppose tyranny through truthful speech and writing. His successful defense of Zenger is often credited with inspiring the term 'Philadelphia lawyer,' which refers to a particularly skillful and clever attorney. Hamilton's estate in Philadelphia, called Bush Hill, was inherited by his son, William Hamilton. The estate played a significant role in American history when it was leased as the vice-president's residence during the period when Philadelphia served as the temporary capital of the United States.
