Amy Irving, born on September 10, 1953, in Palo Alto, California, is an American actress and singer known for her work across film, stage, and television. She is the daughter of actors Jules Irving and Priscilla Pointer, and began her involvement in theater in San Francisco before moving to New York City during her teenage years. Irving made her Broadway debut at age 13 in The Country Wife and later studied theater at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Her film debut occurred in Brian De Palma's Carrie in 1976, and she also played a lead role in The Fury in 1978. She appeared in several notable productions, including a Broadway performance of Amadeus and the film Honeysuckle Rose in 1980. Irving gained critical recognition for her role in the film Yentl in 1983, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She received an Obie Award in 1988 for her Off-Broadway performance in The Road to Mecca and a Golden Globe nomination for Crossing Delancey in the same year. Her stage work includes roles in Broken Glass and a revival of Three Sisters on Broadway. In film, she starred in Deconstructing Harry, reprised her role as Sue Snell in The Rage Carrie 2, and appeared in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic. Later works include independent films such as Thirteen Conversations About One Thing and Adam. Irving also starred in the Broadway production of The Coast of Utopia from 2006 to 2007 and appeared in the 2018 horror film Unsane.
