About Allan Kozinn
Allan Kozinn is an American journalist, music critic, and teacher born on July 28, 1954. He earned bachelor's degrees in music and journalism from Syracuse University in 1976. Kozinn began freelancing as a critic and music feature writer for The New York Times in 1977 and became a staff member in 1991. His career includes contributions to High Fidelity, Keynote magazines, Guitar Player, Keyboard, Pulse, and The New York Observer, where he was the first music critic. Kozinn has authored several books on music and related topics, including works on guitar history, Mischa Elman, The Beatles, and classical music recordings. Since 2014, he has worked with researcher Adrian Sinclair on The McCartney Legacy, a multi-volume biography of Paul McCartney. Volume one was published in December 2022. Kozinn has also taught at New York University and Juilliard School, covering music criticism, Baroque music, the Beatles, and musical interpretation. In 2012, The New York Times reassigned him from classical music criticism to general cultural reporting, a move that sparked controversy. He left the Times in 2014 during a period of layoffs and buyouts and moved to Portland, Maine in 2015. There he served as the classical music critic for the Portland Press Herald until 2020 and contributed as a freelance critic for several major newspapers. Currently, Kozinn is a co-host of the video podcast Things We Said Today, focusing on The Beatles. He is married to writer Paula Brochu, and they reside in Portland, Maine.
