Albert Leornes Greene, known professionally as Al Green, is an American singer, songwriter, pastor, and record producer. Born on April 13, 1946, he gained recognition in the early 1970s for recording a series of soul hit singles including Tired of Being Alone, Im Still in Love with You, Love and Happiness, Take Me to the River, and his signature song, Lets Stay Together. Green is regarded as one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music and is often referred to as The Last of the Great Soul Singers. He became an ordained pastor and shifted focus to recording gospel music during the 1980s. Green has received numerous accolades for his contributions to music, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and he has won 11 Grammy Awards, among other honors such as the BMI Icon award and Kennedy Center Honors. His recognition extends to being listed among Rolling Stones greatest artists and singers of all time. As a canonical Memphis soul artist, Green collaborated closely with notable Memphis R&B musicians and had a long-standing partnership with producer and arranger Willie Mitchell and the Hi Rhythm Section, which led to his greatest commercial successes.
