Aimee Elizabeth Mann, born on September 8, 1960, in Richmond, Virginia, is an American singer-songwriter known for her sardonic and literate lyrics that often explore dark subjects and depict underdog characters. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and initially played with the bands the Young Snakes and Ministry. Mann co-founded the new wave band 'Til Tuesday, which released three albums and is best known for the top-ten single 'Voices Carry' in 1985. Following the band's disbandment in 1990, Mann pursued a solo career, releasing her debut albums Whatever in 1993 and I'm with Stupid in 1995. Although these albums received positive reviews, they achieved modest commercial success. Mann gained broader recognition with her soundtrack for the film Magnolia in 1999, notably with the song 'Save Me,' which was nominated for an Academy Award and a Grammy. Facing conflicts with her record label Geffen, she released her third album, Bachelor No. 2, independently on her label SuperEgo Records in 2000, which received critical acclaim and strong sales. In 2014, Mann collaborated with Ted Leo on the album as the Both. She also wrote and performed songs for the musical Girl, Interrupted, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; these songs were released on the album Queens of the Summer Hotel in 2021. Aside from her music career, Mann is a painter and comic artist and has appeared in various films and television series, including The Big Lebowski, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Steven Universe, The West Wing, and Portlandia. She has received numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2017, and has been recognized as one of the greatest living songwriters by NPR and Paste.
