San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research university located in San Diego, California. Established on March 13, 1897, it is the oldest higher education institution in the city and the third-oldest in the California State University system. Originally founded as the San Diego Normal School to train women as elementary school teachers, SDSU has evolved significantly over the years, becoming a university in 1974. SDSU offers a wide range of academic programs and has seen substantial growth in student enrollment, reaching a record 41,184 students as of fall 2025.
