  Who Are You When the Dance Ends? | Daria Fisher Page Ep 54

  A childhood music teacher once told Daria Fisher Page she was tone deaf — hopeless, not worth the effort to fix. It's the kind of verdict a lot of us get handed young, in one form or another, and Daria's spent her life proving what happens when you don't believe it. She trained for nearly a decade at the School of American Ballet, commuting into New York City starting in fourth grade, eventually switching to the Professional Children's School to make room for a schedule built entirely around dance. She fully expected it to be her life. Then a shattered ankle that never quite healed right forced a decision her senior year of high school — and she walked away. Munir brings in Annie Duke's book "Quit" here, and the two of them land somewhere important: sometimes quitting isn't failure, it's the mature move. From there it's a string of doors that seemed to close — organic chemistry ending a dream of art conservation at Yale's Beinecke Rare Book Library, her mother's genuine dismay when she chose law school instead. But Daria found her real subject in international refugee and asylum law, drawn to the storytelling buried inside every case, and spent nearly a decade practicing immigration and human rights law before moving into teaching. Now she directs the Community Empowerment Law Project at Iowa Law, where she pushes her students to communicate like humans instead of legal documents — a board game that humanizes mass incarceration, dirt-pudding cups that somehow make classmates care about soil-quality law. It's the same lesson Munir applies to advertising every day: "I don't like it" isn't feedback. You need the because.   Love, Humor, and Politics with Lebanese Food w/ Professor Suleiman Mourad | Ep 51

  Why did Cain and Abel really fight? Why does a beer in the supermarket have nothing to do with beer anymore? And why can't Lebanese people agree on a hummus recipe but still can't live without each other? Professor Suleiman Ali Mourad, Myra M. Samson Professor of Religion and Middle East Studies at Smith College, grew up splitting summers between war-era Beirut and his grandfather's farm in South Lebanon — feeding goats, hauling manure, and once confronting a group of armed men who stole watermelons from the farm. He got paid off for his trouble. That mix of seriousness and absurdity runs through everything he studies now. Suleiman builds a case that food is the engine behind religion and history. Adam and Eve's apple. Cain and Abel's competing offerings. Jesus's feeding miracles. Muhammad tested with wine, milk, and water. And it doesn't stop at scripture: he walks through how pistachios continue to cause a naming war between Syria's Aleppo and "Alpine" pistachios to Turkey's "Gazientep" varieties. Hummus, falafel, couscous — all claimed, all contested, all carrying the pleasure of eating as well as the weight of culture. There's real comedy in it too. Suleiman tells the story of asking three aunts for the "correct" fattah recipe and getting three confident, contradictory answers — until one aunt realized that another's recipe was just a doubling of her own. He calls it Aristotle's logic in the kitchen, and it's part of what's driving his upcoming book, A Lebanese Food Comedy. Munir and Rob trade their own memories too — the brother's mom making the hummus while their dad played taste-tester, and the long-running family maxim that Fairuz is a Haddad, since her real name is Nouhad Haddad. By the end, Suleiman leaves us with his three things for creativity: originality with limits, traditionalism with limits, and the humility to try on someone else's intellectual "colored glasses" — a reminder that your own knowledge is relative, never absolute.
