Strength Gives You a Body You Can Trust, with Sinéad Moore
For the first interview of the series, Liam sits down with Sinéad Moore, one of the newest additions to the WSF team: personal trainer, pole and aerial instructor, and, as it turns out, exactly the right person to make one particular case. Sinéad was not a sporty kid. An anxious teenager who found yoga on YouTube, then pole dancing at sixteen, she fell hard for CrossFit in her twenties and got strong, and then learned the hard way what happens when you chase big skills without building the base underneath them. Sore shoulders, a nagging injury from forcing a move called the Iron X before she was ready, and a growing sense that there had to be a smarter way. So she went and studied it: an award winning college dissertation on how CrossFit affects self esteem and body image, and later a sports therapy project on the shoulder injuries that plague pole dancers and how strength training reduces them. The thread running through all of it is simple and powerful: strength gives you a body you can trust. For an aerialist, that trust is physical, the shoulder strength to hold yourself safely in the air instead of collecting an injury "receipt" your body cashes later. For an everyday beginner, it is psychological, the confidence to walk into a gym, or, in the case of one member Sinéad works with, to get back out walking again after losing the confidence to do even that. Same mechanism, two very different bodies. Along the way they get into the "beginner friendly" pole combos that are anything but, the CrossFit era of grinding a workout instead of building the strength to earn it, and why cross training is the not so secret weapon behind every impressive aerialist you admire. Sinéad is also launching an online follow along foundational strength program for beginners and aerialists, twice a week, 35 to 45 minutes, over on her Instagram @movewithsinead.
