The Identity That Built My Success Couldn’t Take Me Further | Steve Sidd
Sep 15, 202647 minS1
Steve Sidd built his life around hospitality, hard work and growth. He opened his first restaurant at 18, learned some expensive lessons early and went on to build a much larger business. But beneath that success was a fear: “If I stop, this all falls apart.” In this episode, Steve joins Fran Harper | The Identity Architect to explore what happens when being the person who does everything becomes part of your identity. Steve shares how trying to control too much contributed to failure, why letting go was so difficult, how perfectionism shaped his leadership and how learning to build systems and empower other people changed both his business and his role within it. It's a conversation about identity, control, failure, resilience, leadership and what happens when the way you achieved success is no longer the way you can continue growing. If you've ever felt like everything depends on you, this conversation may make you question what you're carrying, and why. Ready to explore your own identity? I Left Behind the Identity I’d Spent Years Building | Gavin Lawless
Sep 8, 202647 minS1
Who are you when the achievements and reputation that once defined you no longer follow you into your next chapter? Gavin Lawless knows what it means to perform at an extraordinary level. On his Sharks debut in 1997, he scored 50 points in a single match, a record that has stood for 29 years. But his rugby career also included injuries, narrowly missing out on representing the Springboks, and eventually making the difficult decision to walk away from the game. At 30, another transformation began. Gavin moved to Australia, leaving behind the networks and reputation he'd spent years building. In his new professional environment, nobody knew how successful he'd been, how hard he worked or what kind of person he was. He had to rebuild his identity, brand and reputation from the beginning. In this episode, Fran and Gavin explore: Identity after elite sport Starting again when nobody knows your past Career reinvention and rebuilding reputation Why preparation creates confidence Missing the Springboks and living without regret Success beyond money and achievement Why relationships, health, family and career all require investment Playing the long game What to do when a career or successful chapter suddenly ends? Gavin's story challenges the idea that starting again means starting from nothing. Your role may change. Your reputation may disappear. But the qualities you built underneath them can become the foundation of who you become next. Ready to explore your own identity? The Identity You Build to Succeed Can Become the One You Need to Leave Behind | Robert Smithson
Sep 1, 202659 minS1
Who are you without the job? Robert Smithson knew from just 15 years old that he wanted to become a chef. He was drawn to the food, the energy, and what he calls the “chef rockstar” lifestyle. More than 30 years later, Rob sees that version of success very differently. In this episode of What I Wish I Knew at 30 , Fran Harper talks with Rob about the identity we build through our careers, and what happens when the version of ourselves that once drove us no longer fits who we’re becoming. From teenage chef to senior leadership in airline catering, Rob reflects on why the “work hard, party hard” mentality isn’t sustainable, the sacrifices behind ambition, and why career growth can eventually become less about individual achievement and more about the people you help along the way. They explore: • How our careers become part of our identity • Why success sometimes requires an identity shift • Ambition, family and the sacrifices behind a demanding career • Mental wellbeing and Rob’s involvement with The Burnt Chef Project • Moving from a “me” to “we” approach to leadership • Mentoring and creating healthier pathways for the next generation • Why your first career identity doesn’t have to define your future Rob’s journey is a reminder that growth isn’t always about another promotion, title or achievement. Sometimes it means asking a much more difficult question: If your job title disappeared tomorrow, who would you be? Share your thoughts in the comments. He Serves 9,000 Meals a Day, But Every Plate Has to Mean Something | Dinesh Subramani
Aug 25, 202654 minS1
What if your greatest career was the one you never planned? Dinesh Subramani came to Australia to study Information Systems. But a spontaneous opportunity to cook, and a decision made in around 30 seconds, sent his life in an entirely different direction. Today, Dinesh helps oversee 22 aged care facilities, around 55 chefs and almost 9,000 freshly prepared meals every day. In this episode of What I Wish I Knew at 30 , Fran Harper and Dinesh explore how he is helping rethink aged care dining, from fine-dining nights and cultural menus to resident-led menu decisions and AI-assisted menu development. But underneath the innovation is a deeply human philosophy: Every plate should have dignity. Dinesh also shares why your team’s success should become your success, the importance of creating the next generation of leaders, the support his wife gave him throughout his career, and why he believes we can make our own luck. A powerful conversation about purpose, leadership, career reinvention, hospitality and creating work that genuinely matters. The Brutal Truth About Chef Culture Nobody Talks About | Alan Coxon
Aug 19, 20261h 24mS1
What really happens behind the kitchen door, and what does decades of relentless ambition teach you about success? In this episode of What I Wish I Knew at 30, Fran Harper sits down with Alan Coxon, internationally recognised chef, author, television presenter, British food ambassador and food archaeologist whose extraordinary career includes more than 1,250 television appearances. From starting at 18 in Monte Carlo as the only English chef among 68 international chefs to surviving the extraordinary pressure of opening a massive European hotel, Alan shares stories from a culinary world few people ever see. But beneath the humour and extraordinary stories lies a bigger conversation about identity, pressure, leadership, burnout and the culture hospitality needs to leave behind. Alan reflects on why fear is the wrong way to lead, what he misunderstood about hard work and success at 30, and why decades of awards and recognition ultimately matter less than skills, passion, dedication and the people you help along the way. Funny, candid and unexpectedly thought-provoking, this is a conversation about what ambition costs, what experience teaches, and why there is so much more to a culinary career than life behind the kitchen door.
