  Why do some Bible-believing Christians baptize their children—even before those children have professed faith in Jesus? If you're a Baptist, this practice may seem strange, especially if you've always understood baptism as something that follows personal faith in Christ. I understand that perspective because I once held it myself. In this lesson, John Musgrave explains why Presbyterians and other Reformation-minded Christians practice infant baptism, and why they believe it is Biblical—not because baptism saves a child, but because they understand baptism as a covenant sign that can be given to the children of believers. This video is especially intended to help Baptists understand why Bible-believing Presbyterians and Reformed Christians baptize their children. It is also intended to help Presbyterians and Reformed Christians better understand and graciously explain their own practice when talking with Baptist brothers and sisters. We will consider the relationship between circumcision and baptism, God's covenant promises to believers and their children, the significance of Acts 2, Colossians 2, and the Biblical distinction between receiving the covenant sign and possessing saving faith. Infant baptism does not mean that a child is automatically saved. Saving faith in Jesus Christ is necessary. The question is what baptism signifies and to whom God has given the covenant sign. John grew up in theologically liberal Presbyterianism, came to faith in Christ as a young man, spent time in charismatic theology, and later became Baptist before eventually becoming a Bible-believing Presbyterian. So this is not an argument against Baptists from someone who has never understood the Baptist position. It is an invitation to understand why fellow Christians who believe the Bible come to a different conclusion about baptism. My hope is that Baptists will better understand their Presbyterian and Reformed brothers and sisters—and that Presbyterians and Reformed Christians will be better equipped to discuss this difference with Baptists in a gracious, patient, and loving way.   What are Genesis, Job, and Exodus actually about? In this Sunday School lesson, we review the content and purpose of three important Old Testament books: Genesis, Job, and Exodus. Rather than simply knowing theological conclusions, we want to know the actual content of Scripture and understand how each book communicates its message to God's people. In Genesis, we review creation, the fall, the flood, Babel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and the descent of God's people into Egypt. We also consider how Genesis would have encouraged the Israelites to trust God and move forward toward the Promised Land rather than return to Egypt. In Job, we review Job's suffering, his discussions with his friends, God's response, and Job's restoration. We consider the important lesson that proverbial wisdom is generally true but is not an inflexible rule: suffering does not necessarily mean that someone has committed some particular sin. In Exodus, we review Israel's deliverance from Egypt, the establishment of the covenant through Moses, and the instructions for worship and the tabernacle. We consider why Moses emphasized these things to Israel and why God's people were to remain faithful to the covenant even after Moses was no longer with them. This lesson is part of a larger effort to become more familiar with the content of the books of the Bible so that we can better understand Scripture as a whole. Whether you are a Presbyterian or Reformed Christian, a student of Scripture, or simply someone who wants to understand the Old Testament better, this lesson provides a concise review of Genesis, Job, and Exodus.   What is the Book of Malachi really about? And what does Malachi's prophecy about the “Day of the Lord” have to do with John the Baptist and Jesus? In this lesson on the Book of Malachi, we examine Malachi's message in its historical setting, around 430 BC, following the events recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah. We then trace one of Malachi's major themes: the Day of the Lord—the time when God visits His people in both blessing and judgment. Malachi 3 and 4 point forward to the coming of God's messenger and the coming of the Lord Himself. We consider how the prophecy concerning Elijah is fulfilled in John the Baptist and how Malachi's promises ultimately point us to Jesus Christ. The lesson also explores an important principle for interpreting Scripture: we must understand biblical words and prophecies in the historical and literary context in which they were originally given.
