Sherry’s approach to leadership began long before she became a CEO. Growing up in Kingston in a multigenerational family, she learned service and stewardship from parents, grandparents and a great-grandmother who made the most of what they had and shared what they could. Her father’s philosophy, “live and let live,” became part of how she moves through the world: what does it mean to live well while also making someone else’s life better? That question now sits at the center of her work. At HabCenter, Sherry leads an organization creating opportunities for adults with developmental differences and mental health challenges to work, learn, build relationships, express themselves and live with greater dignity and independence. Sherry talks candidly about what it means to be the person everyone looks to when things go wrong, why she has rarely felt she had the “luxury of panicking,” and the faith, family and practices that help her carry the weight of leadership. In this episode, hosts and co-founders Stacey Luces and Denise Williams step into a conversation that wasn't originally planned, but felt increasingly impossible not to have. For Caribbean people, the experience of being sandwiched between generations carries another layer. Caregiving often isn't something we think of as a separate responsibility. It is simply what family does. Our cultures have long been shaped by collective responsibility, extended family, migration, sacrifice and the expectation that each generation helps the next.  But what happens when the world our children are entering looks very different from the one that shaped us? Stacey and Denise get candid about sending children to college, parenting young adults, loosening the grip of command-and-control parenting and learning to let the next generation lead us too.
