Episode 10: Earth Day Special--The Battle to Save Cape May Harbor
On this Earth Day special episode, we learn about the battle to save Cape May Harbor. The Cape May Harbor was slated for development in 1988. Residents of the island city banded together to stop the construction of a resort alongside this man-made waterway. Members of the Committee to Save Cape May Harbor waged a grassroots battle against developers and won. Thanks to their five-year effort, the harbor is protected. The Green Acres Program in New Jersey protects this waterway and other open spaces for passive recreation and environmental education. Each year, over 26,000 people enjoy the harbor and visit the Nature Center of Cape May thanks to a group of citizens who used the democratic process to prevent the area's development and degradation.
