First, we break down a report out of Bloomington, Illinois where an off-duty assistant police chief allegedly flashes his badge, follows two young men, and tries to steer responding officers toward cuffs, phone seizures, towing, and jail over a minor parking issue that escalates after he gets flipped off. We talk through why “contempt of cop” isn’t a real charge, why rank is not probable cause, and where off-duty intervention should stop and on-duty accountability should begin. Then we zoom out to Huntsville, Texas and the debate over automated license plate readers (ALPR), including Flock cameras. I’m not anti-ALPR. I’m pro-controls, pro-audits, and pro-consequences when officers misuse powerful databases.
