The WorryFree Retirement
TWR 496 - Rules vs Reality
Can retirement really be reduced to one simple rule? For decades, the 4% rule has been a familiar guideline for retirement withdrawals. But retirement involves much more than choosing a withdrawal percentage—including market performance, Social Security, required minimum distributions, taxes, different types of retirement accounts, income needs and legacy goals. In this episode of The Worry-Free Retirement, Tony Walker sits down with Heather Hughes, who is celebrating 20 years with Tony Walker Financial, to discuss an article comparing the traditional 4% withdrawal approach with full and partial annuitization. Heather describes the research discussed in the article as comparing three approaches: withdrawing according to the 4% rule, fully annuitizing retirement savings, and partially annuitizing while keeping other assets invested. According to Heather's summary of that research, the partial-annuitization approach produced the highest income in the cases studied while retaining assets that could potentially provide a legacy.
