Episode #72
Close Enough to Reach
In this week's episode of The Voices of Emanu El, Rabbi Pam Silk explores Lo bashamayim hi, “It is not in heaven,” from Parashat Nitzavim. Using the image of an item pushed to the back of a top shelf, Rabbi Silk considers the ways we can treat Torah, prayer, and Jewish belonging as though they are meant for someone more learned, more certain, or more observant than we are. The Torah’s answer is reassuring: it is already close to us, “in your mouth and in your heart.” Rabbi Silk invites us to enter the High Holy Days as we are: messy, uncertain, still learning, and fully entitled to wrestle with tradition and take our place within it.
