Biblical Authority & Submission in Society (BASiS) Series Q&A: Pt 3 | 1 Peter 2:18-25 | Pastor Tom Drion
This is the third and final instalment in the Biblical Authority & Submission in Society Q&A series with Pastor Mike Dionne and Pastor Tom Drion . The conversation considers how Christians should respond to governing authorities, especially when those authorities are unjust, oppressive, or hostile to the faith. Drawing from Proverbs 24:21–22, 1 Peter 2:13–17, Romans 13, Titus 3, and the example of Christ and the apostles, the discussion explores the difference between lawful appeal, peaceful protest, personal defence, rebellion, and the church’s mission. Particular attention is given to the idea of “evangelistic submission”: suffering unjustly without bitterness, using lawful rights where appropriate, and viewing rulers not as enemies to overthrow but as people who need the gospel. The conversation also raises difficult questions about war, conscience, government trustworthiness, conscientious objection, and how Christians should live together when they reach different conclusions on disputable matters. The call is to think carefully from Scripture, resist a rebellious spirit, honour Christ above all earthly powers, and examine whether our response to authority displays gospel faithfulness or worldly fear.
