In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages , I look at the remarkable true story of Odette Sansom , one of the most famous women to serve with Britain’s Special Operations Executive during the Second World War . Sent into occupied France, Odette worked alongside Peter Churchill as part of the SOE network operating against Nazi Germany. Their work was dangerous enough, but betrayal eventually led to their arrest by the Gestapo. Odette was interrogated and tortured, yet refused to reveal information that could endanger others. She was eventually sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp , where she survived imprisonment and the threat of execution. Her story did not end with liberation. I also look at the role of Vera Atkins , the formidable SOE intelligence officer who, after the war, set out to discover what had happened to the agents who had failed to return — and to identify those responsible for their deaths. Odette’s wartime experiences were later brought to the screen in the 1950 film Odette , starring Anna Neagle and Trevor Howard. This is not simply the story of a secret agent. It is the story of an ordinary woman placed in extraordinary circumstances — and the courage she found when everything was against her. Colditz: The Books, the Escapes and the BBC Television Series

Instead, it brought together some of the most determined and inventive prisoners of war in Europe. In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I explore two remarkable firsthand accounts: The Colditz Story by P. R. Reid They Have Their Exits by Airey Neave I also look back at the classic BBC television series Colditz, starring Jack Hedley, Edward Hardwicke, Robert Wagner, David McCallum, Bernard Hepton and Anthony Valentine. This story has a personal connection for me. I have visited Colditz on three occasions: first with my old friend Dave not long after the Berlin Wall came down, again many years later, and most recently when I stayed inside the castle itself, part of which is now a youth hostel. Across those visits, I watched Colditz change enormously. Its museum today is outstanding and brings the ingenuity, courage and audacity of the prisoners’ escape attempts vividly to life. Colditz also became part of the story in my own novel series, The Parallel Six. Join me as we go behind the castle walls, the ingenious disguises and tunnels, Airey Neave’s extraordinary journey to freedom, the legendary Colditz glider and the television drama that introduced the story to a generation.
