  #117: Nir Eyal: Beliefs Are Tools, Not Truths - Here's How To Swap Them

  Nir Eyal has spent his career studying why people do what they do - and he'd come to a frustrating conclusion. He'd handed readers the answer to distraction on a silver platter, and most of them still didn't act on it. Knowing what to do wasn't enough. Wanting the outcome wasn't enough. Something further upstream was making the decision. That something is belief: convictions you never consciously chose, inherited from parents, teachers and offhand comments, that you've been lugging around ever since. And they're almost never about the past. They're predictions about a future that hasn't happened yet. I'm no good at this. I'm not ready. It's too hard. In this conversation with St John Craner, Nir walks through the four-question process he runs on himself two or three times a day, and demonstrates it live on a belief he'd carried for decades about his own mother - a story that starts with a bouquet of half-dead flowers and ends somewhere he didn't expect.
