How to Stop Carrying the Past Into Your Present | The Mind Shift
Sridhar Shares: How to stop carrying the past into your present Something happens to us. We feel hurt, angry, rejected or afraid. And sometimes, long after the event itself has passed, those feelings are still shaping the way we see ourselves and the way we live our lives. In this solo episode of The Mind Shift Podcast, Sridhar explores one of the core ideas behind the Mind Shift work: that our ongoing suffering isn't only connected to what happened, but to the beliefs, stories and meaning we've carried forward from it. Using a powerful real-life example, he explores how an experience from childhood continued to affect one woman's relationships, work, wellbeing and sense of self decades later, and what happened when she began questioning the beliefs she'd formed around that experience. A note about this episode This episode includes discussion of the long-term emotional impact of childhood sexual abuse. Please listen with care if this is a sensitive subject for you, but I hope you’ll get something useful out of what I talk about. Episode highlights 00:00 Why suffering and stress can compound over time 05:30 The beliefs we create from painful experiences 09:30 You can't change what happened, but you can change what you carry forward 12:00 A practical starting point for questioning your own stories In this episode, we discuss Why painful experiences can continue to affect us long after they've happened. How beliefs and stories form around past experiences. The difference between what happened and the meaning we give it. Why anger and resentment can keep us connected to the past. How unconscious beliefs such as "I'm worthless" or "I'm not good enough" can influence the way we live. Why changing your perspective doesn't mean condoning what happened. How to begin identifying the stories that may be keeping you stuck. Why the same situation can be interpreted in many different ways. What can change when you begin questioning beliefs you've carried for years. How greater freedom can come from changing what you take forward from the past. Key takeaways What happened and what you carry forward are not the same thing. We can't change the events of the past. But we can examine the beliefs, assumptions and stories we've developed because of them, and whether they're still serving us today. A belief can feel true without being true. When we've carried an idea about ourselves for years, it can become so familiar that it feels like part of who we are. Questioning where that belief came from can help us see it differently. Changing your perspective isn't the same as saying what happened was okay. Letting go of anger or questioning the meaning you've attached to an experience doesn't excuse another person's behaviour. It's about reducing the power that experience continues to have over your life. Your perception isn't the only possible perspective. Ask 50 people to interpret the same situation and you may hear many different answers. Recognising that creates room to question whether the story you're carrying is the only way to see what happened. Start by asking what you're believing. When something continues to create stress or suffering, ask yourself: What happened? What am I believing about what happened? And is there another way I could see it?
