What You Love Forms Who You Become
Your habits don’t just fill your calendar, they form your heart. We sit with 1 John 2:12–17 and start where John starts: identity. Before any warning about “the world,” we remember what is already true for God’s people. Our sins are forgiven through Jesus. God made himself known first. God’s word remains in us. We don’t wake up wondering if we’ve finally talked God out of loving us. From that foundation, we reframe one of the most misunderstood commands in Scripture: “Do not love the world.” We’re not talking about a shallow checklist of books, movies, or songs. John is pointing to an alternative way of living, a pattern of desire that competes with loyalty to Christ. He names it plainly: craving physical pleasure, craving what we see, and pride in achievements and possessions. We connect those ancient words to a very modern reality of targeted ads, social media comparison, and the quiet pressure to prove we’re doing well. We also get practical with three diagnostic questions that expose what’s shaping our desires: Where has my appetite become authority? What do I keep looking at that makes my life feel inadequate? What am I using to prove that I matter? We tie John’s warning to Jesus’ teaching about treasure and to Paul’s call to resist the pattern of this age, then we move toward communion as a weekly reminder that we receive rather than achieve.
