Lesson 2: The Call of a Prophet | Teaching Sabbath School with Purpose
Lesson 2 of our Fourth Quarter 2026 series, The Gift of Prophecy, asks what it meant to be called by God to speak for Him. In "The Call of a Prophet," we see that the role was rarely comfortable, and that God still looks for people willing to answer. Study week: October 3 to October 9, 2026 Taught in Sabbath School: Sabbath, October 10, 2026 Memory text: Isaiah 6:8 In this episode we look at: Abraham, whose covenant faith was counted as righteousness and was tested with the call to offer Isaac Elijah on Mount Carmel, calling a divided nation away from idolatry and back to God Isaiah, whose temple vision led to "Here am I; send me," and whose 53rd chapter foretells the suffering Messiah Daniel, faithful in a pagan court, whose prophecies trace the rise and fall of nations John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus and stayed faithful even in prison The early call of Ellen G. White in the months after the Great Disappointment of 1844 A common thread runs through all of them. The calling brought opposition and hardship, yet it also carried a message of hope. For teachers, one practical idea: ask your class what these very different callings share, instead of trying to cover each prophet in equal detail. The shared themes of obedience and hope tend to stay with people longer than a list of names. These notes are meant to help you prepare thoughtfully for Sabbath, whether you teach or study on your own. Coming next: Lesson 3, "Old Testament Prophets."
