  What does it mean for God to protect His people when we still experience suffering, chaos, destruction, and even death?In Amos 9:1–10, God confronts Israel with the seriousness of His judgment, yet this passage also points us toward the special care and protection God gives to His faithful people. Christians are not promised a life free from trouble. Instead, God sovereignly watches over His people and preserves them through the trials and uncertainties of this present age—and even through death.In this sermon segment, we consider how God's people can find solid ground when everything around them is shaking. The world may be filled with political turmoil, war, disasters, personal suffering, broken relationships, financial uncertainty, and the gradual decay of our own bodies. Yet chaos does not mean that God has lost control. Jesus Christ is risen, enthroned, and sovereign over all things.This passage also helps us understand an important biblical distinction: God's people are not necessarily protected by being removed from suffering; they are protected by being preserved through it. God's providence extends to all His creatures, but He exercises a special care for His church, working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.And that care extends beyond this life. And how does this Old Testament prophecy point us to Jesus Christ, the Church, and the security of our salvation?In this sermon from Amos 9:11–15, we consider how God's promises to His people are fulfilled through Christ. Amos speaks of God restoring David's fallen tent, rebuilding what was ruined, and bringing His people into lasting security. The New Testament helps us understand these promises in light of Christ, His kingdom, and His Church.Because Jesus is King, His Church is being built up—and will continue to grow. Because salvation rests on Christ rather than on us, those who have saving faith in Him have a secure salvation. Jesus promises that He will never drive His people away, that none of those given to Him will be lost, and that He will raise them up at the last day.We also consider how Christians participate in the building up of Christ's Church by speaking about Him and faithfully proclaiming His Word. God uses His Word, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring people to faith and to build up His people.Finally, Amos 9 speaks to God's work of restoring and building up believers themselves.   Why Does God Give Us Commands? | Amos 8

  Why does God give His people commands? Are God's commands a burden—or are they actually good for us?In Amos 8, we see the devastating consequences of rejecting God's Word. But God's commands are not given to His people so that they can earn eternal life. Salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ, not by works or obedience to the law. Rather, God gives His commands to guide His people in how to live.This message considers the biblical purpose of God's commands and what John Calvin called the "third use of the law": God's law as a guide for the Christian life. God's commands teach us how to live wisely, avoid the folly and destructive consequences of sin, and live life as God intended it to be lived.Psalm 119 repeatedly describes God's commands as a delight. God's commands are good for us, bringing wisdom, joy, and satisfaction. Amos 8:11–12 gives us the sobering opposite: a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.
