  Episode #63

David Price: Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Liverpool & Life as a Heavyweight | TFH Podcast #63

  Sep 29, 202658 min

Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. Episode 63 is something completely different as former heavyweight boxer David Price becomes the first boxer to join the podcast. David grew up football-mad in Liverpool, went all the way to the final trials for Liverpool Schools and admits that, had his football career gone differently, he might never have stepped into a boxing gym. From there came an incredible career in boxing — and in this episode we bring both of his sporting worlds together. David talks about beating Tyson Fury as an amateur, sharing the ring with Anthony Joshua, the highs and lows of professional boxing, the impact of losing to Tony Thompson, dealing with fear and pressure, and why boxing is such an unforgiving sport. But this is The Football Historian Podcast, so there's plenty of Liverpool too. We discuss his favourite Liverpool players, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, Mohamed Salah, Luis Suárez and Steve McManaman, why Mario Balotelli frustrated him, and why Alan Hansen, James Milner and Joel Matip deserve more recognition. David also recalls one of the greatest Anfield atmospheres he has ever experienced, explains why coming out to You'll Never Walk Alone became such an important part of his boxing career and reveals the fight he always dreamed about: David Price v Tyson Fury at Anfield. We also get into whether modern footballers are actually better than the players of the past, Premier League v European Cup, Liverpool and Everton fans coming together for boxing and plenty more. A football conversation with a completely different perspective. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? Support the show on Patreon from just £1 per month. Episode #62

Natasha Dowie: Liverpool, Everton, England & Breaking Barriers | TFH Podcast #62

  Sep 15, 20261 hour

Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. Episode 62 is a special one, as Natasha Dowie becomes the first former female player to join the podcast. Tash joins me to talk through her incredible career, from growing up as a girl in a boys’ game to becoming a league winner with Liverpool, an FA Cup winner with Everton, an England international and now an ambassador for Liverpool Football Club. We discuss what women’s football was really like before the money, the sacrifices players had to make, training at Widnes, celebrating league titles in Nando’s, moving from Everton to Liverpool, scoring the winning goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup final, and being part of Liverpool Women’s back-to-back title wins. Tash also opens up on her England disappointment, playing abroad in Australia, America, Sweden, Norway and Italy, life at AC Milan, the growth of the women’s game, why young players should experience football abroad, and why the women’s game must keep its identity as it continues to grow. There are also brilliant stories about Matt Beard, Becky Easton, the LFC Foundation, charity games, commentary, the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield, Jürgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, Thiago, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and more. This is a different kind of Football Historian episode — but a really important one. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? John Viola: Inside Football Transfers, Agents, Roberto Carlos & Brian Clough | TFH Podcast #61

  Sep 1, 20261h 31m

Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. After a World Cup and summer break, we’re back for a new season — and episode 61 is something a little different. This week I’m joined by football agent John Viola. We’ve had former players, managers, coaches and supporters on the podcast before, but this is our first proper look inside the world of football agents, transfers, negotiations and the side of the game fans rarely get to see. John has spent more than 35 years working in football, representing players and managers, doing deals around the world and working with some huge names in the game. In this episode, we talk about what agents actually do, why the perception of agents is often so negative, how long transfers really take, why deals collapse, what happens behind the scenes on deadline day, and how money, trust and relationships shape the modern game. John also shares brilliant stories involving Brian Clough, Nicolas Zigic, Charlie Miller, David Murray, Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, Paul Gascoigne, Kenny Dalglish and more. From being told to get out by Brian Clough, to nearly signing Roberto Carlos for Chelsea, to ending up in Roberto Carlos’s helicopter in Brazil, this is a fascinating look at football from a completely different angle. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? Watch the exclusive EXTRA section of this interview via our Patreon. It’s just £1 per month, giving you access to bonus episodes, monthly specials and the full back catalogue. In this week’s Extra Time section, John takes us inside the agent’s office and explains how he now helps educate the next generation of football agents. https://www.patreon.com/TheFootballHistorianPodcast Keep up to date with all our latest clips on our socials: Instagram: https://instagram.com/thefootballhistorianpod/TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@thefootballhistorianpodX: https://twitter.com/TheFHPod Learn more about your ad choices. Episode #60

Kevin Baggio: I Went to Argentina for Messi’s World Cup | The Football Historian Podcast #60

  Jun 30, 202652 min

Welcome to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. In episode 60, we have something a little different for our World Cup special. Kevin Baggio joins me to tell the story of how a Scouser obsessed with Italian football, Roberto Baggio, Diego Maradona and Argentina bought a one-way ticket to Buenos Aires for the 2022 World Cup — and ended up living through one of the greatest football stories ever told. Kevin explains how Channel 4’s Football Italia and USA 94 shaped his love of the game, why Roberto Baggio became such a huge figure for him, and how his love of Maradona and Argentine football eventually took him to Buenos Aires. We talk about arriving in Argentina just after the shock defeat to Saudi Arabia, the fear before the Mexico game, Messi’s goal, the chaos of the Netherlands quarter-final, what it was like watching the World Cup final surrounded by Argentinians, and the explosion of emotion when Messi finally lifted the trophy. There are also brilliant stories about Maradona murals, showing his tattoo outside Argentinos Juniors’ stadium, being accepted by locals, Argentina’s football culture, Emi Martinez, Messi vs Maradona, why he went to Napoli afterwards for the Scudetto celebrations, and why he still feels connected to Argentina today. It’s not a former player interview this week — it’s a story about football obsession, travel, culture, identity and what it means to live through history as a fan. Episode #59

Sammy Lee: Liverpool, Gerrard, Carragher, Rafa & The Everton Decision | The Football Historian Podcast #59

  Jun 2, 20261h 9m

Welcome to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. In episode 59, I’m joined by Liverpool legend Sammy Lee. A boyhood Red from the heart of the city, Sammy went from watching Liverpool from the stands to playing in one of the greatest teams in the club’s history, winning league titles, European Cups and becoming part of the fabric of Anfield. This episode covers his life as a Liverpool supporter, breaking into the first team, the standards of the dressing room, what Graeme Souness, Phil Thompson, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case were really like, and why Liverpool’s success was built on far more than just talent. Sammy also talks through some brilliant moments from his playing career, including his headed goal against Dinamo Bucharest, his famous free-kick against Manchester City and what it was like being part of Liverpool’s European dominance. We also discuss his coaching career in detail, including working under Rafa Benitez, coaching Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, why Lucas Leiva never got enough credit, his time with England’s golden generation, working alongside Sam Allardyce, and the complicated emotions of joining Everton as a proud Liverpool man. This is a proper football conversation with someone who has lived the game from every angle: supporter, player, coach, assistant manager and Scouser. Thanks so much for the continued support, and I hope this instalment of your soon-to-be favourite football podcast continues to impress. Learn more about your ad choices.
