Have you ever said something vulnerable out loud and immediately thought, “ What are they going to think of me?” That's exactly where Vera Ilnyckyj found herself during her first speaking panel. She shared a deeply personal story about divorce and getting fired in front of a room of women—and immediately assumed she'd given them a reason to write her off. But here's the thing about vulnerability: we're often far more focused on how we're being perceived than anyone else actually is. Think about walking into a new gym. You might feel like everyone is watching your form, your weights, or whether you even know what you're doing. But most people are in the middle of their own set, watching themselves. Business can feel the same way. You're worried people are judging your post, your pricing, your story, or whether you really belong in the room. Meanwhile, the person you're worried about may be thinking about their own doubts and struggles. Vera finished that panel convinced she'd embarrassed herself. Instead, women lined up afterward to tell her she'd said what they'd been afraid to say themselves. Sometimes the thing you're most afraid will make people judge you is exactly what makes someone else feel less alone.
