S2E37: The Parable of the Growing Seed: Just Not In His Jurisdiction
Jesus tells a tiny parable about a farmer who plants a seed, goes about his life, and somehow the seed grows without him making it happen. The Parable of the Growing Seed invites us to consider the difference between the work that belongs to us and the work that belongs to God and to trust that just because we can't see something happening doesn't mean nothing is happening. Episode Artwork: James Tissot, The Sower (Le semeur) , 1886–1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper. Brooklyn Museum, purchased by public subscription. Show Notes Jesus says the Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. Then he goes to sleep. He wakes up. He lives his life. Night becomes day and day becomes night. And somehow... The seed grows. In Mark 4:26–29, Jesus tells one of His shortest parables—and the only parable found exclusively in Mark's Gospel. The farmer has real work to do. He plants the seed. When the time comes, he'll gather the harvest. But the actual growth? That's just not in his jurisdiction. In this episode of The Echo Collective , we're exploring the Parable of the Growing Seed and Jesus' strange description of a Kingdom that grows even when we can't see what is happening. We'll look at the Greek word automatē, all by itself," and what this parable teaches us about control, patience, spiritual formation, and the hidden work of God. Because there is work that belongs to us. We plant. We pray. We love people. We show up. We do the next right thing. But we cannot make the seed grow. And sometimes understanding what God has been doing only happens in the rearview mirror, when we look back and finally realize: “Ohhhhh. That's what was happening.” The parable also ends with a harvest, intentionally echoing the language of Joel 3. The Kingdom isn't growing aimlessly. There is a telos —an end, a goal, a destination toward which God is moving His Kingdom. So maybe the invitation is to faithfully do the work that belongs to us... and rest in the hesed of Jesus—His steadfast, faithful love—with the work that doesn't.
