Gen. 24:15 And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up . The servant arrived in the city at evening time when women go out to draw water– Gen. 24:11 . The servant prayed to the Lord for the success of his mission, acknowledging that he stood by the well of water and the daughters of the men of the city were going to draw water– Gen. 24:13 . In answer to the servant’s prayer, a young woman by the name Rebekah showed up at the well to draw water– Gen. 24:15 . Rebekah was the daughter to Abraham’s nephew, hence fulfilled the first threshold i.e., she was from Abraham’s family– Gen. 24:4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” Using her pitcher, Rebekah went down to the well, filled her pitcher (with water) and came up.   Gen. 24:5 highlights a woman’s willingness to follow Abraham’s oldest servant, who typifies the Holy Spirit! In the antitype, this highlights the willingness of a Christian to follow the Holy Spirit. To follow the Holy Spirit is NOT a charismatic experience!! To follow the Holy Spirit is an invitation to receive the ONE MESSAGE He is presently teaching, ALL THE TRUTH, which is centered on ONE PERSON, Jesus Christ, concerning His Coming Kingdom, and subsequently walk in obedience to that message with a view to participating in that Kingdom– Rev. 2:7 . Since the Holy Spirit will testify of Jesus Christ [ Joh. 15:26 ] and He will not speak of His Own but only what He hears [ Joh. 16:13 ], THEN to follow the Holy Spirit and to follow Jesus Christ are synonymous. To FOLLOW Jesus Christ is an invitation to die to self by losing one’s soul-life– Matt 10:38-39; 16:24-26 . Jesus Christ taught the Jews about sheep, a shepherd and a stranger– Joh. 10:1-5, 7, 11, 27-28 . The sheep represent the nation of Israel. The Shepherd is Jesus Christ. The stranger is also the thief, who is none other than the devil– Joh. 10:8-10 . Those Christians who KNOW the voice of the Shepherd, Jesus Christ, in His Word, rightly divided, are the ones who FOLLOW Him and since the Scriptures are full of the Spirit of God, we can make the connection that such individuals are also FOLLOWING the Holy Spirit– Joh. 6:63; 2 Tim. 3:16 . FOLLOWING Jesus Christ and/or the Holy Spirit is NOT automatic for every Christian. FOLLOWING Christ is an individual invitation or better still, it is a personal decision/choice– Matt. 8:19-22; Lk. 9:57-62 . To FOLLOW Christ demands that one pay the COST/PRICE in full. This price is paid here and now. To FOLLOW Christ calls for separation i.e., death of self. The two individuals had to separate themselves from their families. To FOLLOW Christ has an end-goal i.e., the kingdom of God, the kingdom of the heavens.

  After the record of Sarah’s burial, the Scriptures turn to Abraham who by then was old, well advanced in age and who enjoyed the Lord’s blessing in all things– Gen. 24:1 . Abraham called his oldest servant, who ruled over all that he had, and sent him to take a wife for his son, Isaac– Gen. 24:2-4 . Abraham clearly outlined where Isaac’s wife was to be taken from i.e., NOT from the daughters of the Canaanites but rather from Abraham’s family. Abraham tasked his oldest servant with the responsibility of searching for a wife for Isaac. The servant raised a concern regarding the willingness of the prospective wife to follow him– Gen. 24:5 . In response to the servant’s concern, Abraham cautioned him NOT to take Isaac to the land where he came from– Gen. 24:6 . Abraham’s reference point in so far as the success of his oldest servant’s mission left no room for speculation i.e., the Lord God would prosper this mission, at the end of which his son, Isaac, would have a wife taken from his family because Abraham had a track record of the Lord’s faithfulness that he could count on– Gen. 24:7-9 . What we have covered so far in Gen. 24:1-9 constitutes the letter and it is our responsibility to establish the spirit of the letter by the help of the Holy Spirit– 2 Cor. 3:5-6; Rom. 2:28-29; 7:6 .

  Sarah died in the land of Canaan and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her presumably from Beersheba where he dwelt– Gen. 23:1-2; 22:19 . In seeking for property to bury his wife, Abraham described himself as a stranger and sojourner– Gen. 23:3-4 . This is the same type attitude we had seen much earlier and one that we should embrace for ourselves– Heb. 11:13; 1 Pet. 2:11 . Abraham bought the field which belonged to Ephron in Machpelah which became the burial place for Sarah, his wife– Gen. 23:12-16 . This became the burial place for Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob– Gen. 23:17-19; 25:8-10; 49:30-31; 50:12-13 . Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ and therefore Gen. 21 foreshadows His birth while Gen 22 foreshadows His death, burial, resurrection and ascension. Sarah is a type of the nation of Israel which is significant in God’s plans and purposes for Man– Ps 147:19-20; Num. 23:9 Israel is God’s son, His firstborn– Ex. 4:22 . Israel is God’s wife– Jer. 3:8, 14 . Israel is God’s special treasure– Ex. 19:5; Deut. 7:2; 14:2 . Israel is the apple (lit. pupil) of God’s eye– Zech. 2:8 . Israel is God’s people– 1 Kin. 6:11, 13 . The promise made by the Lord to Abraham concerned his descendants, the nation of Israel hence the reason the Lord delivered them from Egyptian oppression– Gen. 22:17-18; Ex. 3:7-8; 6:2-9 . Despite this clarity of PURPOSE regarding their journey, the nation of Israel disobeyed the Lord, choosing the path of unfaithfulness instead, whose consequences were devastating for them– Num. 14:11, 20-23; Judges 2:11-15; Ps 106:28-29, 34-36, 39, 43 . As a result of their cycle of disobedience, the nation of Israel DID NOT enjoy the fullness of the Lord’s Promise to Abraham, culminating in their captivity, in fulfilment of God’s Word– Deut. 28:15, 22, 41 . The Assyrian and Babylonian Captivities took place in 722 BC and 605 BC respectively– 2 Kin 18:11-12; Jer. 20:4, 25:1-14 . However, despite the nation’s rebellion, the earthly realm of the kingdom has been covenanted to them– Ezek. 37:24 . The Lord will yet-future restore Israel to her rightful position– Jer. 30:1-3 . The New Testament opens with the heavenly realm on offer STRICTLY to the nation of Israel, the physical descendants of Abraham, a redeemed people. John the Baptist preached this message to the nation of Israel ALONE– Matt. 3:1-2 . Jesus Christ preached this message to the nation of Israel ALONE– Matt. 4:12-13, 17 . Jesus Christ was sent to the nation of Israel ALONE– Matt. 15:24 . Jesus Christ sent His disciples to preach this message to the nation of Israel ALONE– Matt. 10:5-7 .

  Jas. 2:14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works ? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead . 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead ? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect ? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness .” And he was called the friend of God . 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only … 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also . In addition to the truth seen in Paul’s letters to the Churches in Rome and the region of Galatia, James states the following: Faith finds its best expression through works! In this context therefore, merely admitting that one possesses faith without works is insufficient because even demons BELIEVE and tremble– v19 . In other words, faith without works is DEAD! To illustrate this, James uses the example of a brother or sister who needs both clothing and food. Mere words to such an individual are of no benefit. Rather, the only benefit that will accrue to such an individual is provision of both clothing and food. James then ropes in Abraham to clarify his point− Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? From Paul’s letter to the Romans and Galatians, we learnt that Abraham was justified BY FAITH, NOT BY WORKS but James ‘seems’ to suggest otherwise i.e., he was justified by works! Is this a contradiction? For the avoidance of doubt, God’s Word DOES NOT contradict itself because it was written by the SAME AUTHOR, the Holy Spirit, about the SAME PERSON, Jesus Christ! Was Abraham justified by faith or by works? To answer our question, let us note that justification is a judicial act of God whereby He declares a person to be righteous. Said differently, justification is God declaring a person to be righteous as a result of acknowledging or recognizing His righteousness in that person, in our case Abraham! When Abraham believed God’s word concerning his descendants, it was accounted to him as righteousness! At this point, Abraham was justified BY FAITH i.e., by believing! When testing Abraham, God allowed an event that would seemingly contradict His promises i.e., God had promised Abraham that in Isaac, his seed shall be called and this is the same son that God asked Abraham to offer as a burnt offering! Abraham obeyed God by offering Isaac on the altar and in this, he was justified by WORKS through which his FAITH was PERFECTED! The Greek word for ‘perfected’ means to complete, i.e. (literally) accomplish, or (figuratively) consummate; consecrate, finish, fulfil. Abraham’s action (WORK) of sacrificing Isaac in obedience to God’s instructions brought his faith to an end or to the intended goal! Through Abraham’s works, the Scripture in Gen. 15:6 was FULFILLED and he was called the friend of God– Jas. 2:23 And the scripture was actually and fully realized… (Wuest)
