Episode #34
Where Is Your Leadership Story Actually Coming From?
When you made your last big decision, did you actually choose it, or did an old story choose it for you? Jeremy Flagg and Henry Ballard open a new three-week series built around a question that applies whether you've got a corner office or you're just the person everyone in your life quietly turns to. Most people are making decisions on autopilot, running off a story they never picked and never checked out. It works fine right up until it doesn't. This week's question is where that story actually comes from, and Jeremy walks through three places to look: your personality, your power, and your past. Personality comes from the Latin persona, the mask an actor wore on stage. A lot of what gets called someone's leadership style is a mask built long ago for protective reasons, worn so long they forgot it wasn't their actual face. Power is what you're actually capable of, some of it trained, some of it dormant until life demands it, and Jeremy tells the paintball story that proves it. And past is the one people avoid the longest, because it costs something to look at. Jeremy's river-versus-rowboat picture reframes how the ancients viewed time versus how we view it now, and why mining your past for patterns is different from being stuck in it. In this episode, you'll learn: Why personality literally means mask, and how a protective mask can calcify into an unexamined leadership style The paintball story that revealed a dormant strength Jeremy didn't know he had The river versus the rowboat: two completely different ways of relating to your own past Why naming a pattern isn't the end of the work, it's the fork in the road The second question Henry adds after naming the pattern: what moment gives the pattern permission to take over Jeremy and Lisa's parenting story, and what happened when a story that had worked for twenty years suddenly needed to be rewritten -- This week's Breakthrough Challenge: think of one relationship where you've been leading the way you led five, ten, maybe twenty years ago. Ask yourself what's driving that: personality, power, or past. Don't rush to change it yet. Just notice where it shows up and what it keeps leading you to do. -- Next week: is this story even still serving you? -- Head over to thebreakthroughbros.com to subscribe to The Breakthrough Brief, delivered every Friday morning. -- Take the CliftonStrengths Assessment -- The Breakthrough Bros · Jeremy Flagg · Henry Ballard · leadership identity · narrative identity · Carl Jung · leadership story · personality power past · pattern recognition · self-awareness for leaders · leadership psychology · Ignite Clarity to Lead Effectively · leadership podcast 2026 · thebreakthroughbros.com
