Tell Me Your Story
I thought this might be of interest as an interview about an unexplained creative experience at the intersection of consciousness, imagination, and the mystery of where stories come from. After a baseball-sized brain tumor upended Barry Maher’s career, he went into surgery not knowing what kind of life would be waiting for him afterward. What he woke up with was something he never expected: a full-blown, vivid, horrific story playing in his mind, like a memory of something he had just watched. Ultimately that story became the seed of Maher’s new novel, The Great Dick: And the Dysfunctional Demon (Crystal Lake Publishing), whose title parodies both The Great Gatsby and Moby-Dick. Maher, a nationally syndicated humorist, does not claim to know exactly how the story materialized, or where it came from. Was it an anesthesia-induced hallucination? The result of a seizure during surgery? Something his unconscious mind had somehow assembled? Or something stranger? But he does know that the experience did not feel like either ordinary dreaming or conscious invention. It felt less like making something up than remembering something that had already happened. And that left him with questions he still thinks about: Is the conscious mind always where a story begins? Or is it sometimes where something already formed finally rises into awareness? Maher is available for interviews or podcast conversations diving deeper into these questions and exploring: Why he resists calling the experience a dream What the experience suggests about consciousness and where experience begins What it suggests about creativity and where stories come from How he holds open multiple explanations — anesthesia, seizure activity, imagination, or something stranger — without claiming certainty Why it’s important to pay attention to the strange material that surfaces when conscious control loosens Why the mystery may be more valuable than the explanation Barry’s bio is below. Would you be interested in speaking with Barry or receiving a copy of his book? ABOUT BARRY MAHER Barry Maher (www.BarryMaher.com) is the product of four years at the University of Notre Dame, an hour and a half in the graduate journalism program at UC Berkeley, and five befuddled weeks at the Whopper College of the Burger King Corp. In his misspent youth, his articles appeared in perhaps a hundred different publications and, in order to eat, he held nearly that many different jobs. Sometimes he lived on the beach. Not in a house on the beach. On the beach. With the sand and the seagulls. Then he started telling his stories to audiences. More importantly, he started telling his stories to audiences and charging. That took him all over the country and around the world, with a client list that is a Who’s Who of leading corporations, associations, and cruise lines. You may have seen Barry on The Today Show or CNBC, or in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, or in his own Slightly Off-Kilter syndicated column. On the downside, he’s also been incarcerated twice: once for not making a left-hand turn out of a left-hand turn lane, and once for aiding and abetting a loiterer. He’s deeply repentant.

Book: Green Glitter Girl Website(s): www.Greenglittergirl.com Connie Jones, a psychotherapist who survived profound childhood trauma, is showing readers how understanding the brain and nervous system can become a powerful step toward breaking patterns that trauma leaves behind through her own true story, Green Glitter Girl: A Journey of Hope and Trauma Recovery. Please refer to the press release below for additional information and let me know if you would like to see a copy of Green Glitter Girl for interview and/or review purposes. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Therapist Turns Personal Trauma Into Roadmap for Hope, Healing and Self-Compassion ST. LOUIS, Mo., Aug. 31, 2026 — Psychotherapist Connie Jones was just 3 years old when she unknowingly watched her younger sister die. Born to severely depressed parents, Jones would go on to experience abuse, neglect and medical emergencies that extended into adulthood. Decades later, as a therapist, Jones began recognizing the ways extreme stress can shape the nervous system and keep trauma survivors trapped in patterns they may not understand. Her deeply personal journey and clinical perspective come together in Green Glitter Girl: A Journey of Hope and Trauma Recovery. Jones wrote the book to help readers understand the neurobiology of extreme stress while finding greater self-awareness, self-compassion and hope. Many of her patients, she says, have found that understanding their own responses helped liberate them from long-standing patterns. Through the lens of nervous system science, Green Glitter Girl explores how trauma can reshape the body and why recovery is not simply a matter of “getting over” what happened. Instead, Jones examines the process of reclaiming a sense of safety, connection, voice and self. In the foreword, Stephen Porges, Ph.D., creator of Polyvagal Theory, describes Green Glitter Girl as a story that illustrates the human nervous system’s capacity to adapt, survive and ultimately heal. “I want to instill hope that, although readers may feel overwhelmed and stuck within their limited beliefs and self-sabotaging habits, they can be free from them,” Jones said.
