Episode 88: Human Trafficking in the 21st Century
This podcast reveals the reasons for human trafficking being still one of the major global issues in the 21st century even though there are international laws, criminalization, and widespread public awareness. It sheds lights on the difference between the existence of legal frameworks and the fact that trafficking manages to adjust itself to the changing times. It discusses that social media and online platforms have become major factors in this issue by not only providing a new means of recruitment and exploitation but also by exposing the structural inequalities such as poverty, migration and gender that increase the vulnerability of individuals. The show further includes a conversation with Lehte Roots, who gives a glimpse of the profession through explaining the difficulties of fighting the trafficking and the role of awareness through education, policy and international cooperation.
