Five Friends Started a Business... Here's What Happened
What happens when five longtime friends decide they are tired of paying $150 for golf shirts and think they can build something better? Jeff Welch joins Sugar, Spice & Spirits to tell the story of Jack Apparel, a golf apparel company he founded with four friends while continuing his full-time career in commercial banking. The guys pooled roughly $20,000, tested products from different manufacturers, started selling through their own networks, and slowly reinvested into the business. What began as an idea to make enough money for an annual golf trip eventually filled a dining room with inventory, moved into a warehouse, and then doubled its warehouse space. Jeff shares what growing a side business really requires when all five partners still have careers, families, kids, and other responsibilities. We also dive into Jeff's career in banking and the lessons entrepreneurs should understand before asking for financing. Jeff explains the difference between community banks and large national banks, why character can matter when evaluating a borrower, how bankers look at risk, and why the strongest banking relationships go far beyond simply finding the cheapest interest rate. Plus, we talk football, three ACL surgeries, college sports, competitive golf, women's apparel, business partnerships, Shark Tank, and why golf trips suddenly become "content creation."
