Shot 14 Times and 30 Seconds from Death: The Power of Human Durability | Derrick McManus
Eighteen shots fired in five seconds. Fourteen hits. Three hours critically wounded on the ground during an active siege—and just 30 seconds from death. Former South Australian STAR Group officer Derrick McManus survived something almost impossible to comprehend. But this conversation goes far beyond the moment he was shot. Derrick shares how preparing for the possibility of the unthinkable helped him manage his thoughts, his physiology and his fear while two severed arteries threatened his life. He also speaks honestly about what came afterwards: rebuilding a body that could barely lift a one-kilogram weight, living with doubt and exhaustion, the breakdown of his marriage, and finding a future he could feel optimistic about. Together, we explore what Derrick calls Human Durability—the ability to prepare for challenge, remain connected to our choices and recognise when it is time to push forward or to stop, rest and replenish. This is not a polished story about an invulnerable man. It is a deeply human conversation about survival, identity, family, recovery and what it takes to build a meaningful life when everything has suddenly changed.
