The story of Faherty brand, the story of a family business, the story of Kerry as writer, an intellectual, a feminist, an activist, a co-founder, a wife, a mother--- is told, with stunning radical honesty, in her book aptly titled ‘Selfish’. Here on Story + Rain Talks episode 178 we get into it all, including the radical connection she is experiencing through her book’s readers. We get really real about motherhood.   A Note From The Host: Jewel’s music, her work as a singer-songwriter, has had tremendous impact on American culture, and worldwide. Since arriving on the scene as an artist in the 1990’s, her lyrics and sound have been woven into the fabric of our lives. I was excited to sit down with her to hear her story firsthand, and she’s the kind of guest I’m grateful for, the kind of person I’m honored I get to share questions with. You walk away from the talk with a lot to think about, and maybe just a bit wiser. But I did not expect to feel the depth of Jewel’s genius in the way that I did. She’s been in the spotlight for over thirty years, adept at giving interviews, so beautifully comfortable in front of a camera and in front of fans---whether on stage or on Instagram---that you think that practice, that ease is what’s coming through in the conversation. And then you realize, she is the embodiment of ‘a way with words’. She’s thoughtful and wise. She’s whip-smart. And that’s why I titled her cover story, Stroke of Genius. She lives the depth of her music. As she shares ahead, much of her music was written ‘as if angels were standing by’. Jewel shares wisdom about investing in oneself, and facts around mental health, the subject of her extensive activism. You’ll hear the stories of her one-of-a-kind upbringing; I was eager to get her unique perspective on motherhood as both a pop culture icon raising a teen son today, and as someone who was raised in the way that she was. We dive into her visual-artist self, she talks songs and tells nostalgic stories of both life and career, whether delicious or difficult.   A Note From The Host: I’ve been keeping an eye on Beanie Feldstein and how she’s been steering her career since Lady Bird. Now, in her early 30’s, when I discovered she was to be one of the latest guest stars on season five of Hulu hit, Only Murders in the Building, I knew it would be great. The television and Golden-Globe nominated actor is also known for her work on Broadway and her singing chops, and I loved hearing her ardently and assertively align herself with her musical side (and how dance has chased her all her life), hear about just how long she’s been singing (since a small child), and how a grave problem with her once-gravely voice actually left her speechless---then, propelled her to patiently pursue the passion and skill of hers. On the podcast, Beanie’s so passionate about the love she’s found and also candid about who she was before. One of the most interesting and delightful things about the conversation you’re about to listen to, is Beanie on how much she loves people, and that its central to her creative process. Most known for playing a best friend, how uncanny (or perhaps not at all) when you hear where, and how, and why--- friends and the importance of friendship have occupied her life. Beanie really knows who she is, and its almost thrilling to hear her how she does it. We discuss so much about fashion, a lot about family, working with one brother, and losing another. We talk in great detail, about the many inspiring actors and artists she’s gotten to collaborate with. Her future projects are superstars themselves, and there’s a charity that many of you might choose to donate to after giving this talk a listen.
